What’s On the Table for T-Day 2011 in Denver?

Each year at LifeStyle Denver, the Thanksgiving meal takes front and center.  What’s it like eating tofu turkey?  How about store bought pumpkin pie?  Or bad whine?Girl with pumpkin

What’s on deck for Thanksgiving 2011?  Mashed potatoes.  Aside from turkey, the absolute best thing about Thanksgiving.  And you’ll be treated to a great mashed potato recipe!

But you’ll have to wait until November 24th.  So enjoy this beautiful Fall weather in Denver, harvest those pumpkins, and check back later.

See you soon!

Take the Pooches to Cherry Creek Open Space Dog Park

Cherry Creek Dog ParkMy friend Donna and I like to take Roxy and Duke to the Cherry Creek State Park.  We went early yesterday morning and it was brisk, but beautiful.  Unless you were wearing a fur coat. The dogs didn’t seem to mind the morning chill one bit.

At the northeast side of the park, just off of Parker Road and East Orchard Road you’ll find the entrance to a road that will take you up into the off leash dog area.  We had to park in the day care lot yesterday, since the park entrance was closed. But we were able to walk into the open space without a problem.

Some days there is a toll collector there requesting a $2 fee to enter the dog area.  The park entry fee for use of the entire area is $8.

How can you beat that Colorado sky and dogs with big grins on their faces?

Denver Residents Falling Back

Time ChangeEveryone in Denver is falling back tonight.  At least, those of us who remember to turn our clocks back an hour will.

So don’t get left behind.  Change your clocks and sleep an extra hour on Sunday morning.

And if you’re having an open house, give your broker a break if she shows up an hour early.

You can search for Denver open houses on my GretchensDenver website every weekend!

Denver – B Cycle Program in Winter

Denver's B Cycle in snowWhen I lived in Germany, I was flabergasted that they would ride their bicycles throughout the winter.  On snow-packed roads!

I guess being California raised meant that I had no clue you could bike all winter.

Denver’s B-Cycle program is out to prove it this year, and the rental bikes will be available in sunshine or blizzard.

Today’s storm didn’t slow down many people.  The Denver Public Schools think their students are like postal workers.  School is rarely canceled – rain, sleet or snow.  And by late afternoon the sun was shining.  Oh, Denver!  A glorious place to live!

The University of Denver to Host 2012 Presidential Debate

University of Denver's Buchtel TowerAs a proud alumna of the University of Denver, I was interested and pleased to hear that the first of several Presidential Debates will be staged there.

DU, as it’s known locally, is a wonderful private institution which offers a diverse course of study including a world renowned School of International Studies and an outstanding MBA program.

Watch the debate on October 3, 2012 for scenes of our lovely city and University.  The debate should be interesting too.  Here’s hoping a few students and alumni get tickets!

Denver’s Informal Recycling Program

green couch in alleyIn Central Denver we have a sort of informal way we recycle used household goods.  We dump things in our alleys and the recycling scavengers take them away.

My formal acknowledgement of our underground, recycling black market will no doubt be eschewed by the City and County of Denver.  Although we have a formal recycling program that finally included Plastic 4 and 5 this year, the idea of dumping your unwanted goods in the alley will probably be looked on as littering.

Here is a list of the things we’ve shed over the years:

We’ve also found and claimed a mini trampoline and a near new bread maker!  How can you go wrong?  Even the things that don’t work are claimed for their parts.

You’ll never look at dumpster divers the same way when you participate in Denver’s Informal Recycling Program.  They’re helping keep perfectly useful goods out of the landfills.

Just remember to keep your garage door closed.  You don’t want anyone to think your cool Gary Fisher bicycle is up for grabs.

Are you in the market for a house with an alley?  Search for your next place at Gretchen Faber’s Denver area real estate web site:  www.GretchensDenver.com.

Free Ice Cream Today in Denver!

Boy with ice creamWithout ice cream, there would be darkness and chaos. ~Don Kardong

Ahh, Ben & Jerry’s. The stuff of many a late-night pig out session.  Luckily, it comes in pints, and not just half gallons.

For today only, it’s free at local Denver Ben & Jerry’s shops.  And there happens to be a shop just down the street from us!  I’ll be a happy camper today.

Stop into any of the locations for your free cone from noon to 8 p.m.  Ben & Jerry’s has 4 locations in and around Denver at Denver International Airport, near the University of Denver, at Belmar and at Park Meadows Mall.  You can also stop into their Boulder and Fort Collins locations if you’re not in Denver today.

For more information, check out Ben & Jerry’s online scoop shop locator.

Happy Free Ice Cream Day!!

LifeStyle Denver Takes an Overnight Detour to Winter Park

Avalanche AreaLovely Colorado.  You never can tell what’s going to drop in on you.

We like to rhetorically say about the weather this time of year, “Well, it IS springtime in the Rockies…”

Yesterday began as a typically busy Wednesday.  Sales meeting, then tour, then a broker open house.  Afterward, I ran the leftovers to a friend who had severely sprained her wrist and bruised her face in a fall outside AT & T.  (Note to AT & T: why would you put a store where there are concrete stairs outside the entrance, when you know we’ll be gazing down at our phones on the way in?!)  She saved the phone – not a scratch on it.

But I digress… The day was lovely in Denver.  Mid 50’s, a bit windy.

The plan was to run teenage LifeStyle Denver and a friend to my sister’s mountain place in Winter Park for a few days of snowboarding fun during Spring Break.  Then immediately turn around and head back Denver.  Teenage driver needed mountain driving experience, so he was behind the wheel when we pulled out.  He did fine, but the weather was harrowing and the drive was a nail biter.  Berthoud Pass can be a bear, but it’s usually not so bad.  Yesterday, it was at its worst.

So after about 45 minutes at sis’s ski house, I turned back around to drive home.  With my music on, not that rap stuff.

Passing through Fraser, then Winter Park, I couldn’t help but notice that the snow was coming down harder and I figured it would be a slow drive.  Still, I could make it home before 9 p.m. for sure.  By the time I hit the Mary Jane side of the ski hill, I noticed brake lights and then a big overhead sign flashing Berthoud Pass Closed!!  Turning around, I called my Brave Ski Mom sister and asked if she had a toothbrush and a bottle of wine.  I was heading back for the night! (yes wine, no toothbrush.)  Turned out to be an avalanche.  Right after we passed through the first time.

We had a great time catching up.  Sis lives just a few miles from us in the Lowry neighborhood, but we’re always running 40 different directions. I even got to play a 5 year-old’s version of Go Fish!  She won.  It was rigged.

Winter Park, Colorado is a great alternative to some of Colorado’s other ski locales. It’s a more low-key town than most, and the terrain has something for everyone.  The actual resort is owned by the City of Denver.  In a brilliant move during the 1930’s George Cranmer (namesake of Denver’s Cranmer Park) made the purchase of Winter Park possible by Denver’s Parks and Recreation Department.  Even today, Denver has steadfastly held on to that asset.

With nearly 3 feet of fresh powder this week, Colorado’s spring skiing looks to be fabulous.  Head up to Winter Park for a day and hopefully you won’t end up on a surprise overnight!

Here are a few resources about Winter Park:
