Denver’s Lola – Mexican Fish Restaurant

Denver’s Lola – Mexican Fish Restaurant

Lola, has been a Denver Restaurant staple in the LoHi neighborhood for years and is located on one of the hottest blocks at 18th and Boulder, nestled right next to  Little Man Ice Cream and Linger.

Lately, I’ve been visiting Denver’s new additions to our impressive culinary delights, and had almost forgotten about this wonderful gem.

Making plans with friends who all have different dietary needs is challenging, so finding the perfect spot to appeal to everyone can feel like an effort in futility. Last week, we knew we wanted to land in Downtown Denver or LoHi, which left us stumped. Until I remember my old standby, Lola.

I frequented Lola years ago when I had a friend working there as a hostess. It gave me the chance to get to know a fun, hip new area of town. I loved Lola so much, I planned my high school reunion there.

So I was happy when my group agreed to reminisce with me and visit an old favorite. It was even better than I remembered! We started off with the Lola Guac and the Shrimp Ceviche before deciding on our entrees. I shared the Tampiquena and Seafood Enchilada and was absolutely in heaven.

It’s been a over a week and a half and I’m still dreaming of the Tampiquena with the Kobe sirloin and enchilada sauce – I’m hooked! To top the night I was served a Paloma. I don’t normally like tequila, but upon the waiter’s suggestion, I gave it a try. I was so pleased with my choice as it really was the best I’ve ever had.

What made our dinner more enjoyable was running into an old friend who had worked at Lola for years. It was a special treat to meet him, especially when he was able to share some insider tips with us – he confirmed that we’d ordered well.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, we were all full and happy from our wonderful meal and we skipped dessert.  If I had needed a sweet, I would have ordered the Salted Oreo Choco Taco or the Cinnamon Doughnuts.  Both great options to satisfy the sugar addict.

I learned a valuable lesson that night, which is similar to the childhood song “make new friends, but keep the old …” New restaurants are wonderful, but the old standbys are like gold.

By the way, the Yelp reviews for Lola are unbelievable.  Check them out here.
