Over 65,000 People Have Moved to Denver in the Last Two Years

How do we remain courteous with a vast influx of people?

Denver has blossomed into a bustling metropolis over the last few years. Over 65,000 people have moved to Colorado since 2016 alone. In addition, the city has added 9,844 more people within the last year. You’re probably seeing a vast number of apartment buildings popping up around the city, and as many people like to joke, Denver’s bird has been dubbed ‘the crane.’

As a native, I’ve been particularly keen on noticing everything that’s changing. My once quiet, beautiful home (still wonderful!) has turned into a lively megacity with an influx of residents taking over. With this influx came new visions: hip restaurants, fun retail, and breweries galore just to name a few. However, we’re also seeing slight instances of urban chaos.

So, how do we remain courteous in a city that’s rapidly changing? I think we can do it, as I see it as an opportunity for community, cohesiveness, and harmony.

The Traffic (I know, I know)

If you’ve been anywhere near a street in Denver over the last few years, you know for a fact large numbers of new people are calling Colorado their home. Colorado Boulevard is practically un-drivable, University is nothing short of a parking lot, and don’t even get me started on I-25! Rush hour seems to be an all day occurrence, and with that comes a potential for aggressive drivers.

The Colorado State Patrol says there is a 34% increase in aggressive driving reports city wide since 2010. The math is simple: more cars on the road means more traffic. Stay safe out there, and remember to breathe deeply before merging, flipping on your turn signal, or laying down the horn!

Public Transportation

One of the best ways to avoid aggressive driving and overall traffic frustration is to take public transportation. In addition to lowering your blood pressure, you’re also practicing sustainable living for the benefit of the city. However, there are some unspoken etiquettes for how to be a respectful RTD passenger.

1. Don’t place your bag on a seat: your bag didn’t pay for the spot!

2. Don’t listen to music loudly or speak loudly on the phone.

3. Don’t place your feet on the seat in front of you.

4. Personal space!

Did you know RTD has its own code of conduct? The six page rulebook was written in 2016 and shares RTD’s 53 prohibited behaviors (so if you were thinking about bringing a shopping cart on board…think again!)

Co-Working Spaces

We’re seeing an influx of co-working spaces emerge around the Mile High City. Green Space and WeWork are some examples. However, sharing WiFi with a community of people does not give way to encroaching on people’s space. Here are some tips for making your co-working space as pleasant as possible!

  1. Take phone calls and loud conversations outside.
  2. Leave the thermostat alone! You’re not the only one who’s cold… I promise.
  3. If you’re sick, please stay home!
  4. Remember, we all have to use the microwave!
  5. Know when saying ‘hello’ is and isn’t polite.
