Denverites are preparing for the possibility of a second Corpse Flower bloom. If you visited the gardens in 2015 when it bloomed for the first time, you might remember the long lines of excited visitors who woke up at 6 am to see this rare occurrence. However, this is a fun event for kids and adults alike. I highly recommend you make plans with the kiddos to visit the Botanic Gardens and share the brilliance of nature with them. And just a heads up, you might be surprised by the peculiar scent of the rare corpse flower.
The DBG has named their Corpse Flower “Stinky” after the pungent smell if gives away. While there is always a chance the expected bloom will not be successful, the gardens are hopeful for another year of blooming. Additionally, the gardens are anticipating the bloom to occur September 2nd or 3rd (just in time for Memorial Day weekend!).
The Denver Botanic Gardens offers ‘bloom alerts‘ where you can sign up to get notifications about its progress. If you’re a DBG member, you can sign up to visit the Corpse Flower an hour before the gardens open. As well, pre-ordering your tickets is highly encouraged. Horticulturists are expecting the flower to bloom longer this year due to its increase in size.
9News has a live stream of the bloom, which you can watch here. The gardens have a hashtag (#StinkyDBGReturns) where you can share photos and videos of the flower (or your excited faces!).
